This I Believe

My name is Nick Blum and I believe that playing sports creates a bond with your teammates that is forever unbreakable. Since the age of 4, I have been playing sports. Whether it was on an organized team or just with friends outside having fun, you could always find me with some type of ball, bat, or stick. My mom was the person who turned me onto sports and it was at a very young age. When I was born I was surrounded by the world of sports. My family constantly would watch sports or buy me banners and clothes with their favorite teams on it. Every day as a baby, my mom would come home from work and toss me a foam Detroit Lions ball to teach me how to catch, and it is here where my love for sports began.
I started playing baseball at the age of 4 and have been playing ever since. I also had a 4 year stint on the SJA football team, until I was forced to stop playing from multiple concussions. Although the aspects of the two sports were different in many ways, they had one similarity that was resounding, and it was the bond that I formed with all of my teammates. I have met an abundance of people and have made many friends through playing sports. Every year that I have played I have befriended people that I may not have ever talked to in school or outside of the sport. In my early years there were countless times where classmates of mine have had different views than me and have had other interests and I just decided not to talk to them because they were not like me, but playing sports changed this. When you are on the field, court, or ice you have to have your teammates back and hold each other accountable to do the right thing, and you cannot do this without knowing each other. Going through the vigorous training, spending countless hours working to improve, and helping your teammates to succeed, really force you to get to know the other person and learn their story. In my personal experience, this proves to be true. When I first meet new teammates, I try to ask questions that let me get to know the person and I try to put myself out there so that they do not feel uncomfortable being on a new team. Then throughout the training season the bonds between my teammates, both new and old strengthen, and when it is time to begin playing games, our bonds are unbreakable and just keep getting stronger. When we win, lose, or accomplish personal goals, we do it as a team and a team only.
Playing sports has taught me to be a better person and learn how to reach out to connect with others that were alike and different than me. Teammates have come and gone in my sports career that I may never meet again, and there are teammates that I will always stay connected with. No matter if I ever see them again or not, we will always share the bond that was created on the field, and this is why I believe that playing sports creates a bond that is unbreakable.
